The 8s were given a choice to today to continue with our Health lesson from Monday or to use this period for their Genius Hour project. Everyone agreed an extra period would be helpful. Mrs. Tam continued to check in with groups and will continue tomorrow.

Today was a Genius Hour work period. Mrs. Tam checked in with a handful of groups to see their progress. Presentations begin Tuesday, May 25. A lot of groups really need to take the time and put their assignment together.

We went over the marking Rubric for the Genius Hour project. Due to online learning pushed back, we will now begin presentations May 26th. This gives us a little over a week to get this presentations prepared.

We are very close to finishing off our Sugar Debate. We have some people who are very passionate about it and it's great to see. Unfortunately, it is disappointing to see some of our class not step up and contribute to our conversations. Despite being given four periods to prepare for this debate, they chose to remain silent the whole time. They were even given a choice to type in the chat if they are shy.

What a great start to the debate! Once the ball got rolling, the Grade 8s took off and argued (in a civilized manner, of course) and defend their opinions with facts and research. Can't wait to continue tomorrow!

Mrs. Tam has caught up with all students about their Genius Hour assignment. Some groups really need to make better use of their time. The rest of the time was used to catch up on unfinished assignments, for example, their Science.

Mrs. Tam went over the debate structure today and assigned us our teams. We then broke off into our breakout rooms to begin researching for Team Proposition and Team Opposition. Please see Google Classroom for the document.

Mrs. Tam marked the Sugar documentary assignments over the weekend. She will not impressed with the quality of the responses. She provided exemplars of what a Grade 8 Level 1-4 reflection should look like. She also gave the opportunity for those who scored a 1 on their assignment to redo it. This redo due date is Thursday, April 29th.

Today was a Catch Up Day. Mrs. Tam checked in with a handful of groups to discuss the progress of their Genius Hour projects. She will continue to do this tomorrow.

We discussed who and what influences our eating habits. Students came up with: family, friends, media, culture, personal taste, medical experts, trends/fads, advertisements, labels, etc.. These influences can be positive or negative.
We will be conducting a debate next week on the statement: "Sugar is the greatest threat to people's physical health." By Friday, you must choose a side (no grey area) and let Mrs. Tam know.

99% of the class have completed their elevator pitch. We have some VERY interesting topics. I'm excited to learn and to see the progress of your project. For tomorrow's class, we will be spending a bit of time going over expectations for our two weeks online and just making sure everyone understands how to get on.
